Cordless Phones and Wireless Interference

Many cordless phones available on the market today can interfere with contemporary and future wireless networking technologies. At home, where the density of phones and wireless Access Points and wireless users is low, this problem is negligible.  But in a higher-density environment such as the Education Building, the aggregate affect of interference could significantly impact the wireless network.

To help prevent degradation of our wireless network, please follow these recommendations here on campus:

Technology Recommendation Comments
DECT 6.0 RECOMMENDED Newer standard designed not to interfere with wireless network.
5.8 GHz Discouraged. May interfere with current and future wireless network.
2.4  GHz Discouraged May interfere with current wireless network.
900MHz Ok to use. Older technology.

(In the future, we hope to list some recommended phones available from preferred vendors.)
