Connecting to the College of Education Servers from a Macintosh OS X Machine

NOTE: If you experience issues connecting to the servers (especially from off campus), please try installing the CITES VPN Service. For more information, please visit our Clients Outside Of Campus page.

To connect to the College's servers (e.g., files.education.illinois.edu), choose "Connect to Server" from the Finder's "Go" menu. From there, type in the hostname of the server. Below, please find more detailed instructions on connecting to our servers.

1. From the Finder (click on any open space on your Macintosh desktop or click on the Finder icon in the dock to get to the Finder), select the "Go" menu and choose "Connect to Server".

2. Enter the address for the server you are trying to access into the "Server Address" window. See example below for format.

NOTE: Connecting to our file server via Apple File Protocol (AFP) is no longer supported in Windows Server 2008, the current server operating system for files.education.illinois.edu. With that in mind and to avoid possible conflicts with future server upgrades, we recommend you type "smb://" before each College of Education server address to which you intend to connect. For a list of available servers, see the College Servers and Names Web page.

3. Once you attempt to connect to the appropriate server, a dialog box should appear prompting you to log in. Type in your Active Directory account and password (the same one used for Netfiles, Exchange, or for logging into Windows computers managed by the College of Education).

4. If your login is successful, the available server folders (e.g., shares) will appear in the next window. Select the volume to which you need access and click OK.

5. Once you're connected to the appropriate server folder, you can create an alias on your desktop simply by simultaneously holding down the Option-Command keys while dragging the folder to your desktop with your mouse. DO NOT RELEASE the Option-Command keys until you release the mouse button on your desktop first. You should see a curved "alias" arrow attached to your folder both as you're dragging the folder to the desktop and after you have successfully created the folder alias.
