Connecting to the College of Education Servers from an XP/Vista Machine
NOTE: If you are a member of UIUC and, after trying the instructions below, you are having difficulty connecting to the servers from off campus, please try installing the CITES VPN Service. For more information, please visit our Clients Outside Of Campus page.
1. If appropriate, log onto your computer with your UIUC
Active Directory (AD) Account. Though this is not required,
it will simplify the process.
To log in with your AD account: When you start up your computer
you are prompted to log in. Use your AD login and password and
make sure that the Domain field contains UIUC. If you are currently
logged in with a different account hold down the <CTRL>
, <ALT> , and <DELETE> keys simultaneously to logout.
Then logon with your AD account.

2. From the start menu, select "Run...".

3. Type the name of the server you are connecting to in the Open
box. In the example below we are connecting to www.ed.uiuc.edu,
the College web server, by typing \\www.ed.uiuc.edu . Another common server is \\files.ed.uiuc.edu. See
College
Servers and Names for a list of servers in the College
of Education.

4. If your are not logged onto your machine with your Active Directory
account or do not have access to the service, you will be prompted
for a password as below. Use your username preceded by "UIUC\" in
the Connect As box (i.e. UIUC\jdoe). Use your Active Directory password
to connect.

5. Navigate to the share and folder you need access to by clicking or double-clicking on the icons in the resulting window.
6. If you would like to create a desktop shortcut to your server folder, simply right-click on that folder and choose "Send To ... Desktop (create shortcut)".
7. To map a network drive to your desired server folder, right-click on "My Computer" and select ""Map Network Drive...". In the folder path, enter the path to your server folder (e.g., \\files.education.illinois.edu\Users\johndoe). You can choose whichever available letter you would like to be assigned to that drive.
