Ph.D. Program in Language and Literacy
The Ph.D. program in Language and Literacy education requires students to explore both the broad issues facing language and literacy education today and to delve deeply into one or more of these issues through coursework and independent research.
Breadth
To fulfill the breadth requirement, Ph.D. students will take the following course:
CI 590 Introduction to Language Studies in Education
and at least two of the following three courses (equivalent to four semester hours each):
CI 560 Trends and Issues in Language Arts
CI 562 Linguistics in the School Curriculum
CI 570 Issues and Trends in Reading
Depth
In addition to breadth across the four areas listed above, students will choose coursework that enables them to focus deeply on a specific area. Students must consult with their advisors to choose their focal area and appropriate coursework for that area. This focal area will then help define an emphasis for the student's independent research, culminating in the doctoral dissertation.
