Summer Research Support for Faculty
Applications Due
Monday, March 30, 2009
Introduction
The Bureau of Educational Research in the College of Education will provide funds, on a competitive basis, to support faculty research efforts during the summer months. Grants of up to $6,000 will be available. Up to three (3) awards will be made available for Summer 2009. These awards are funded through the generosity of the alumni and friends of the College.
The purpose of the Summer Research Support for Faculty program is to permit tenure track faculty to spend concentrated time on specific new research activities by providing additional resources. This opportunity provides funding for projects that are not covered by other funding sources such as the Campus Research Board, Scholars Travel Fund, Faculty Fellows Program or external grants and contracts. For example, funds could be used to convene a working group during the summer to work on a grant proposal or to cover costs of international travel not covered by Scholars Travel Fund or other sources. Highest priority will be given to those applications where other funding sources are not available, and additional funding would not duplicate funding available from other sources. Joint applications for collaborative projects will be considered.
The proposed project should be limited enough in scope to be accomplished reasonably in a month or two. Ideal activities include preparation of proposals for external funding, piloting or field testing, and data analysis.
Grant funds may be used for:
- Part or full one month summer salary for faculty, including appropriate fringe benefits*
- Graduate student support, including appropriate fringe benefits*
- Research related travel expenses
- Transcription, data analysis, and other support services
- Software and other equipment purchases (use of grant funds to purchase equipment such as computers or printers is not permitted, unless clearly related and essential to the proposed research and not available on campus).
*You must contact the Office of Budget and Resource Planning, or your departmental Business Contact to confirm these rates.
Application Process
To apply, applicants should submit a proposal that includes the following:
- Applicant’s name, address, telephone, e-mail
- Title of project
- Brief description of project (no more than 1000 words). The description should include major objectives and activities to be completed during the summer months. A description of how the funds will increase faculty’s capacity to carry out the project (e.g., eliminate the need for summer teaching), potential longer term impact of the project for the faculty and the field, proposed products or interim outcomes.
- Budget and justification.
- Sources of past and future support (List funds obtained or pending in support of the specific project proposed and funding obtained in general in support of similar projects/research stream. Describe the types of funding including the funder name, dates, amounts, project title and brief project description.)
The College of Education Research Committee will review applications. Six hard copies of the nomination materials should be submitted to: Paige Spangler in the Bureau of Educational Research, 38 Education. The deadline for receipt of proposals is March 30, 2009. Upon completion of the project, recipients will be asked to submit a one-page summary of their accomplishments on or before August 15, 2010.
