New Strategic Initiatives for Innovation
Education, in both theory and in practice, is at a critical (some would say crisis) point in history. In a world that has seen itself transformed by technology, innovation and social progress - education has too often been a reactive follower.
It is a different century. It's time that the same spirit of innovation and the tradition of "breakthrough moments" that has taken us from horseback to outer space and from chalk to Bluetooth takes root in the field of education. It starts here, at Illinois.
We can craft the software and hardware for learning and teaching in the 21st century. We can provide the fundamental scholarship and research that leads to policies, laws and practices that provide everyone the chance to learn. We can build the bridges between scientists, artists and teachers that create new models of the old classroom. We've set some large goals. We have a lot of work to do. And, we've chosen to start with four new Initiatives for Innovation that build on our existing strengths and will make a quick, measurable and positive impact on our community, our state and our world.
